Project Description:

Signaling the new path of an endowed Guyana, this project will serve as a ‘home’ for hosting exhibitions of national importance, on a ten-acre site in Georgetown. A barometer for the town’s revival, the insertion of this landmark structure into the urban landscape builds on the notion of the ‘Garden City’ by which Georgetown was once known.

Its formal gesture evokes undulating petals, referencing the Victoria Regia Lily (Amazonica water lily) on the coat of arms, the coconut palm fringing the coast, and the radiant beauty of the lotus lilies adorning the trenches. These symbols are echoed in the plan and synthesized volumetrically to denote a transcendence of constraints.

From a cultural perspective, it is intended that the architecture will evoke a sense of national pride – ‘speaking’ of its people, reflecting its place and its time. Not simply to replicate what has come before but to combine old and new technologies in a way that is meaningful and resonant with present experience.
